A powerful tornado struck Southern Brazil on November 3, 2023, resulting in at least five fatalities and injuring 432 others. The Paraná State Government confirmed that four of the deaths occurred in Rio Bonito do Iguaçu and one in Guarapuava. The tornado caused significant destruction, collapsing buildings and trapping residents within the debris. As of Saturday, search and rescue operations were still in progress.

The response to the disaster has involved the Military Fire Department of Paraná and local health services, which provided medical care for the injured. Among the 432 injured individuals, nine were reported to be in serious condition. Local and federal officials visited the affected areas on Saturday morning to assess the damage and coordinate relief efforts.

Initial assessments classified the tornado as an EF-2, but further evaluations suggested it might be reclassified as an EF-3. Wind gusts during the storm reached between 111 and 155 mph, contributing to the extensive damage.

Emergency Measures and Ongoing Recovery Efforts

Since early November, various cities in Paraná have experienced severe weather, including heavy rainfall, storms, and hail. These conditions prompted the State Government to implement emergency measures aimed at releasing resources to assist victims and facilitate rebuilding efforts. As of Friday, a total of 14 cities were declared to be in a state of emergency.

The government has pledged to continue its support for affected communities, ensuring that necessary resources are allocated for recovery. Officials are working to provide aid and restore essential services to those impacted by the tornado’s devastation.

In the wake of this disaster, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and prepared for potential future storms, as the region has been grappling with adverse weather conditions. The situation is evolving, and further updates will be provided as recovery efforts continue.
