Congressional Caucus Spending Soars to $50 Million Since 2019

BREAKING: New reports reveal that partisan and special interest caucuses in the U.S. House of Representatives have spent a staggering $50 million since 2019 on various expenses, including staff, food, and travel. The Democratic Caucus led the charge, accounting for $16.4 million of the total expenditure, while the Republican Conference followed closely with at least $14.4 million. Additional caucuses, such as the New Democratic Coalition, Asian Pacific American, Congressional Black, and others, collectively spent around $15 million.

Caucuses focusing on specific issues, including the Problem Solvers and Equity Caucuses, each reported spending nearly $1 million. Notably, the Main Street Republicans utilized $534,000 in taxpayer funds, while the Pro-Choice Caucus spent $345,000.

David Williams, president of the Taxpayers Protection Alliance, expressed concerns over this spending, stating, “This money is gone. You have to pay for it privately or through campaign funds.” He emphasized that taxpayers might be funding caucuses that they fundamentally disagree with, creating a significant conflict of interest.

JD Rackey, associate director at the Bipartisan Policy Center, defended the caucuses, citing their role as essential forums for developing legislative ideas. “A long history of political science research shows that these caucuses serve as legislative idea and policy hubs,” he noted, arguing that they prevent stagnation in legislative development.

However, Daniel Schuman, executive director of the American Governance Institute, countered that some caucuses, like the Problem Solvers Caucus, have not been particularly effective in fostering bipartisan cooperation.

Calls to several caucus chairpeople’s offices went unanswered, leaving questions about the future of these spending practices and their implications for taxpayers.
