Safeway to Close Hayward Store by 2026, Jobs to Be Saved
UPDATE: Safeway has announced the impending closure of its supermarket in Hayward, California, set for February 2, 2026. In a move aimed at preserving jobs, the grocery giant plans to transfer all affected employees to nearby locations.
The closure will impact approximately 76 associates currently employed at the store located at 231 West Jackson St. According to a WARN letter sent to the state’s Employment Development Department, Safeway does not anticipate any layoffs resulting from this decision.
Terra Powers, Safeway’s vice president of human resources for Northern California, confirmed in a letter dated November 5 that the company is committed to relocating its workers. “We intend to place all the associates into a position at another nearby location,” Powers stated. Specific details regarding the new assignments have yet to be finalized.
All affected workers are represented by the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 5 and Baker’s Union Local 125. Notably, these workers hold bumping rights, allowing those with seniority the option to displace less senior employees at the new locations. It remains unclear how this may affect job security for other workers at these sites.
Safeway has reassured employees that they will continue working at the Hayward store until operations conclude. The company aims to ensure a smooth transition for its staff amid these changes.
As the situation develops, employees and community members are encouraged to stay informed on potential job placements and reassurances from Safeway regarding the future of their workforce.
This urgent update highlights the significant impact on local employment as Safeway navigates store closures while striving to maintain its workforce. The community is watching closely as details unfold.
