Hiroshi Tanahashi Reflects on Jealousy of Kenny Omega’s Arrival
Hiroshi Tanahashi, an eight-time IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, recently opened up about his initial feelings of jealousy towards Kenny Omega when the latter joined New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) in late 2014. Omega, known as “The Best Bout Machine,” entered NJPW as a member of the Bullet Club, leading to a storied rivalry between the two wrestlers that showcased their differing styles and philosophies.
Their notable feud culminated at Wrestle Kingdom 13 in January 2019, where they faced off for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. Tanahashi triumphed in that intense contest, further cementing his legacy in the sport. As Tanahashi prepares for his retirement from professional wrestling, scheduled for January 4, 2026, at the Tokyo Dome, he has been engaging in a series of interviews with fellow wrestlers, reflecting on his storied career.
In a recent conversation with Kenny Omega for NJPW World, Tanahashi candidly expressed his initial feelings upon Omega’s arrival. He stated, “I was a little jealous of you—of your athleticism and your looks. You had it all together.” Tanahashi acknowledged the unexpected journey their rivalry took, noting, “But from that first impression I had, I never imagined that years later, we would be in the Tokyo Dome main event. Life is crazy.”
As the wrestling community anticipates Tanahashi’s final match, details regarding his last in-ring opponent remain unconfirmed. This retirement marks the end of an era for one of the most respected figures in professional wrestling, whose contributions to NJPW have had a lasting impact on the sport. The upcoming Wrestle Kingdom 20 event promises to be a significant moment, both for Tanahashi and his fans around the world.
With his reflections, Tanahashi not only highlights the competitive spirit that defines professional wrestling but also underscores the personal connections forged through years of shared experiences in the ring. As fans await the culmination of Tanahashi’s career, the legacy he leaves behind will undoubtedly influence future generations of wrestlers.
