Bill Maher Warns Democrats Risk Becoming a ‘Ghost Brand’ Now
UPDATE: On the latest episode of “Real Time,” aired on October 31, 2025, comedian and host Bill Maher delivered a stark warning about the future of the Democratic Party, likening its declining influence to the fate of the once-powerful retail giant, Sears. Maher expressed urgent concerns that the party is on the brink of becoming a “ghost brand,” similar to how Sears has faded from its former glory.
In a compelling segment, Maher articulated, “The cautionary tale of the ghost brand is important because it applies not only to business but also to politics.” He emphasized that the Democratic Party, once a dominant force, risks losing relevance as it grapples with its lowest approval ratings in 35 years—a staggering 63% unfavorable rating among voters.
Maher highlighted the historical significance of Sears, which once accounted for 1% of the entire U.S. economy and 41% of the appliance market. He stressed that just as Sears became a mere shadow of its former self, the Democratic Party could face a similar demise. “Democrats once controlled Congress and the Supreme Court, but now they struggle for relevance,” Maher warned.
He drew parallels between the decline of the Democratic Party and the missteps of other once-popular brands, including Playboy. “Playboy decided they didn’t need straight men anymore,” Maher quipped. “And predictably, sales collapsed.” His critique of the party’s direction resonated with many, suggesting that the Democrats may be alienating key voter demographics.
Maher did not shy away from dark humor, referencing the closure of Barneys, which filed for bankruptcy in 2019. “After Barneys closed for good in 2020, it became, yes, a spirit Halloween,” he joked, emphasizing the dire need for the Democratic Party to revitalize its approach.
The urgency of Maher’s remarks reflects broader concerns within the Democratic Party, as strategists grapple with finding effective ways to regain voter trust and confidence. Reports indicate that some within the party are so desperate for a polling boost that they are considering extreme measures to regain relevance.
As the political landscape shifts, Maher’s commentary serves as a wake-up call for Democrats. With midterm elections approaching, the party must reassess its strategies to avoid becoming another ghost brand of American politics.
