New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields addressed recent criticism from team owner Woody Johnson, asserting he does not believe a conversation would change his performance. Fields, who has struggled this season, stated he is focused on improving his game rather than engaging with the owner.

During a press session after practice on Wednesday, Fields emphasized his stance: “I don’t think me talking to him is going to do anything. It’s not going to make me play better. It’s not going to give me more confidence on the field.” His comments come in the wake of Johnson’s remarks at the NFL’s fall meeting in New York, where he attributed the Jets’ 0-7 start directly to Fields’ performance.

Owner’s Remarks Spark Controversy

Johnson’s unsolicited comments indicated frustration with Fields, stating, “It’s hard when you have a quarterback with a rating that he’s got. I mean, he has ability, but something just is not jiving.” He further noted, “If we can just complete a pass, it would look good.” Fields acknowledged the criticism but appeared unfazed, noting that “everybody knows I need to play better” and accepting that blame often falls on him as the quarterback.

The situation has heightened speculation regarding Fields’ future with the Jets. With Tyrod Taylor poised as a potential replacement, Fields is reportedly under pressure to perform. He confirmed that he learned about Johnson’s comments through reporters, despite the issue being addressed by head coach Aaron Glenn during a team meeting earlier that day.

Fields described his relationship with Johnson as distant, stating they had only met briefly before games. “It doesn’t bother me,” Fields said regarding the criticism. “You can’t let anything affect your mind… sometimes there’s going to be times where you have to be the only one who believes in yourself.”

Focus on the Upcoming Game

Despite the turmoil, Fields is concentrating on the next challenge against the Cincinnati Bengals this Sunday. He declined to entertain questions about a potential trade, stating, “I don’t like answering those questions… that’s just going to stir up more stuff that we don’t need.” His current contract runs through 2026, which includes $10 million in guaranteed salary for that year, complicating any potential trade scenario.

Glenn has not yet confirmed whether Fields or Taylor will start against the Bengals, suggesting he wants to maintain a competitive edge. The Jets are looking to turn around a dismal season, and with Fields under the microscope, every game becomes critical for his future with the franchise.
