Kings’ Keegan Murray Secures $140M Extension Amid Injury Setback

UPDATE: Sacramento Kings forward Keegan Murray has just secured a monumental five-year, $140 million rookie contract extension, as confirmed by representatives Mark Bartelstein and Kyle McAlarney of Priority Sports. This deal ensures that Murray will remain a vital player in Sacramento through the 2030-31 season, solidifying his role as a key two-way wing for the franchise.
Murray, the No. 4 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, made an impressive impact in his first season, earning a spot on the All-Rookie team and helping the Kings break their playoff drought as a full-time starter. His performance has been crucial for Sacramento, particularly in light of his defensive prowess, which has become increasingly essential for a team that leans on offensive firepower.
Despite experiencing some plateaus in his offensive stats, Murray’s defensive skills have shone brightly. He is one of only three players in the league to record at least 500 3-pointers, 150 blocks, and 150 steals over the past three seasons, alongside Anthony Edwards of Minnesota and Derrick White of Boston, according to ESPN Research. Last season, he defended 2025 All-Stars in 1,005 halfcourt matchups, ranking fifth-most in the NBA.
Murray’s statistics also reflect his solid contributions, averaging 12.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.4 assists across 76 games last season. He has shown remarkable durability, appearing in 233 out of 246 games during his first three years. However, he is now facing a setback, as he is expected to miss several weeks due to a torn UCL in his left thumb.
This contract extension is particularly notable as Murray becomes the sixth player to agree to a rookie extension this year, just ahead of Monday’s 11:59 p.m. ET deadline. His ability to consistently make an impact on both ends of the court makes this extension a significant move for the Kings as they aim for sustained success in the NBA.
As the season approaches, all eyes will be on how Murray’s recovery progresses and how his absence may affect the Kings’ early-season performance. The urgency of this extension, combined with his injury status, makes it a pivotal moment for the franchise and their loyal fanbase.
