Internet Pup Dunkin Inspires Legacy for Shelter Dogs After Death

UPDATE: In a heartfelt initiative ignited by the tragic passing of beloved internet dog Dunkin, creator Keely Gaffney is transforming grief into action for shelter pups. Following Dunkin’s untimely death at just *8 months old*, Gaffney is determined to honor his legacy through charitable efforts that have already made a significant impact.
Gaffney and her fiancé, Nash Morgan, adopted Dunkin, a golden retriever puppy, just over a year ago. His playful spirit and charm quickly captivated an audience, amassing over *250,000 followers* on social media. Gaffney recalls, “We instantly fell in love with him… he was just an absolute angel.” However, their joy turned to heartbreak when Dunkin’s health rapidly deteriorated, revealing *internal bleeding* likely caused by cancer, leaving the couple devastated.
Upon Dunkin’s passing, the internet community rallied around Gaffney, providing support and encouragement. This outpouring of love prompted her to create lasting change. “We had two SUVs filled with toys and food and everything and made the donation to a couple different shelters around us,” Gaffney explained. The couple’s efforts aim to spread the joy Dunkin brought to their lives to other shelter dogs.
In an inspiring move, Gaffney launched Dunkin’s Doggy Day Out, a program designed to give shelter dogs from HALO Animal Rescue in Phoenix a day of fun and pampering. Gaffney stated, “Losing Dunkin was heartbreaking, but at the same time it inspired me to turn that pain into something more hopeful.” Each outing includes hikes, parks, and spa makeovers for the dogs, allowing them a day of freedom and love that they might not otherwise experience.
The initiative is gaining traction, with companies like PetSafe and Dog is Human stepping up to support Dunkin’s Doggy Day Out. Gaffney noted that the primary goal is to encourage others to get involved, as many shelters allow for “day fostering” of dogs. Since the program began, numerous fans have reached out to local shelters, and many have even adopted dogs they took out for the day.
Gaffney shared the powerful feedback she’s received: “Since we started this series last spring, we’ve received so many messages from people who’ve tried it themselves saying it was the best day ever.” This initiative has not only helped Gaffney and Morgan cope with their grief but also sparked a nationwide movement of compassion and action.
To further honor Dunkin’s memory, Gaffney is developing Dunkin’s Angels, a project aimed at assisting dog owners facing the emotional and financial burden of euthanasia. Gaffney explained, “No one should have to decide how to say goodbye to their best friend while worrying about money.” The initiative is still in its early stages but has already started highlighting crowdfunding sites for pet owners in need.
Gaffney’s journey of healing continues as she and Morgan welcomed a new puppy named Brew in June. Brew, at just *5 months old*, is described as a “cuddle bug” who is bringing joy back into their lives while also establishing his own social media following.
Reflecting on Dunkin’s impact, Gaffney stated, “Although it was such a short time, I would do it all over again, even if it meant going through that grief and that loss, because loving him was so much better than not having him at all.”
As Gaffney’s initiatives grow, they serve as a poignant reminder of the joy pets bring into our lives and the lasting change they can inspire, even after they are gone. For more information on Dunkin’s legacy and how you can get involved, visit Gaffney’s social media channels.
