Orioles Acquire Shane Baz from Rays in Blockbuster Trade
BREAKING: The Baltimore Orioles have just made headlines by acquiring right-hander Shane Baz from the Tampa Bay Rays in a significant trade that sends a package of four prospects and a draft pick to Tampa. This urgent move, confirmed on July 15, 2023, underscores the Orioles’ aggressive pursuit of starting pitching as they prepare for the upcoming season.
In this rare intradivision deal, the Orioles parted with outfielder Slater de Brun and catcher Caden Bodine, both of whom were first-round picks in this year’s draft. Additionally, they included breakout right-hander Michael Forret, outfielder Austin Overn, and a competitive-balance Round A pick worth over $2.5 million in slot money. This hefty price tag highlights the Orioles’ determination to bolster their pitching rotation.
Shane Baz, now 26, comes off a standout season in the majors, where he pitched 166.1 innings, recording 176 strikeouts and posting a 4.87 ERA. With nearly four years of major league service, Baz is under team control until the end of the 2028 season, making him a valuable asset for the Orioles.
As the Orioles continue to strengthen their roster, this deal comes amid reports that the Rays are also finalizing a three-way trade involving second baseman Brandon Lowe, who is set to join the Pittsburgh Pirates. In return, the Rays are expected to receive outfielder Jacob Melton and right-hander Anderson Brito. This strategic shift aims to replenish their farm system as they navigate an increasingly competitive American League East.
The prospects sent to Tampa are notable in their own right. Caden Bodine, drafted with the 30th overall pick, was recognized for his defensive skills and hitting prowess at Coastal Carolina, where he posted an impressive .326 batting average in 11 Low-A games. Slater de Brun, selected just seven picks later, is a talented outfielder with a well-rounded offensive game, standing at 5-foot-10 and weighing 187 pounds.
Also noteworthy is Michael Forret, a 14th-round pick from 2023, who excelled with a 1.58 ERA across High-A and Double-A, boasting 91 strikeouts in 74 innings. Meanwhile, Austin Overn, a third-round pick in 2024, showcased his speed by stealing 64 bases this season, along with 13 home runs and 43 RBIs.
The Orioles are not slowing down; they have been the most active team this offseason. Following the acquisition of first baseman Pete Alonso and closer Ryan Helsley, and the trades for left fielder Taylor Ward and reliever Andrew Kittredge, this latest move solidifies their rotation alongside left-hander Trevor Rogers and right-handers Kyle Bradish and Dean Kremer.
As the dust settles on this trade, baseball fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how this impacts both teams in the coming season. The Orioles have made it clear: they are in it to win it, and they are not holding back. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
