Sotheby’s Breaks Records with $236 Million Klimt Sale in NYC
Sotheby’s auction house has achieved remarkable success following its recent relocation to Madison Avenue from Yorkville. The prestigious auctioneer has set two significant records, highlighting an impressive turnaround in its fortunes. On November 18, 2025, Gustav Klimt’s 1914 painting, “Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer,” fetched an astonishing $236 million, marking the highest price ever for a work sold by the auction house. Additionally, a self-portrait by Frida Kahlo, titled “The Dream (The Bed),” sold for nearly $55 million, establishing a new record for a female artist.
The auction took place in the former home of the Whitney Museum, located at the corner of East 75th Street. Since the move, foot traffic has increased significantly, with numerous patrons, including affluent socialites, frequenting the venue. One insider noted the stark contrast in Sotheby’s financial performance after the relocation, stating, “Sotheby’s was losing money before on York Avenue, and the staff was worried about losing jobs in a soft art market. What a difference a few blocks makes.”
Celebrating Art and Culture in New York
The recent auction not only underscores Sotheby’s financial revival but also reflects the growing interest in art as a valuable asset among collectors and investors. As high-profile pieces attract record bids, the auction house has positioned itself at the forefront of a booming art market.
In addition to the remarkable sales, New York continues to be a hub for cultural events. Glenda Hatchett, known for her long-running television show “The Verdict with Judge Hatchett,” is expanding her influence beyond the courtroom. She is collaborating with designer Cesar Galindo, showcasing selections from his Spring 2026 collection. Hatchett’s vibrant fashion sense has gained attention, and she is set to celebrate her 25th anniversary on air with a stylish showcase.
Meanwhile, the Museum of Jewish Heritage held its annual fundraising dinner, where Julianna Margulies introduced the parents of Edan Alexander, a young man recently released after being held captive by Hamas for 584 days. The event featured a passionate speech by actor Michael Rapaport, who spoke candidly about his ardent support for Israel during the ongoing conflict.
Political Aspirations and Community Engagement
In the political arena, Joseph Hernandez has announced his candidacy for New York State Comptroller, aiming to secure the Republican nomination against incumbent Democrat Tom DiNapoli. Hernandez, who previously ran for mayor, emphasizes the need for fiscal responsibility and accountability in government. His background in building health care companies and his personal history as a Cuban immigrant inform his commitment to public service.
Community engagement remains a priority for various figures, including former MLB pitcher Bartolo “Big Sexy” Colón. He partnered with Dr. Ramon Tallaj of SOMOS Community Care to distribute 4,200 turkeys and 10,000 pounds of groceries to families in need ahead of Thanksgiving. This initiative aligns with SOMOS’s mission to support vulnerable communities in New York.
On the entertainment front, Patti Smith celebrated the 50th anniversary of her iconic album “Horses” at the Beacon Theatre, delivering a captivating performance that included an appearance by Michael Stipe of R.E.M. Additionally, singer Ne-Yo is making his Broadway debut in Alicia Keys’ musical “Hell’s Kitchen,” while also supporting fellow artist Celina Savage at her album release party.
As New York City continues to buzz with activity, from art auctions to cultural celebrations and political campaigns, the blend of creativity and community spirit remains a defining characteristic of the metropolis.
