UCSF Fresno Announces Urgent Research to Combat Valley Fever Surge
URGENT UPDATE: UCSF Fresno is ramping up efforts to improve the diagnosis of Valley Fever, a disease impacting thousands of Californians annually. Officials report a staggering 12,700 cases in 2024, highlighting the urgent need for better diagnostic tools and awareness.
Dr. Geetha Sivasubramania, Division Chief of Infectious Diseases at UCSF Fresno, emphasized the complexity of Valley Fever, stating, “It’s not as simple as pneumonia.” The disease is endemic to the region, affecting individuals who often work outdoors. Recent data from the California Department of Public Health reveals alarming case numbers: 763 cases in Fresno County, 518 in Tulare County, 148 in Merced County, and 70 in Madera County.
Dr. Sivasubramania noted that while 60% of cases are mild and may resolve without intervention, the remaining 40% can lead to severe health complications. “In about 10%-15%, it can spread beyond the lungs,” she warned, underscoring the dire need for swift diagnosis.
UCSF Fresno is actively researching innovative testing methods, including PCR-based technologies, aimed at enhancing diagnostic accuracy. “We want to unify all of these patients in one place,” Dr. Sivasubramania stated, encouraging healthcare providers to consider Valley Fever in patients presenting with respiratory symptoms.
As part of their initiative, UCSF Fresno is raising awareness among local physicians and urgent care doctors. Dr. Sivasubramania urged, “If you have someone coming in with pneumonia or a cough that’s not going away, you have to test for Valley Fever.”
The push for improved testing and education is critical, as timely diagnosis can save lives. The ongoing studies at UCSF Fresno aim to break down barriers to testing and ensure patients receive the care they need.
