Dick Van Dyke Celebrates 100 with Reflections on Life and Death
As Dick Van Dyke approaches his milestone 100th birthday on December 13, 2025, the legendary entertainer has shared his candid thoughts on life and mortality. In his recently released book, 100 Rules for Living to 100, Van Dyke expresses a sense of gratitude for the long life he has led, filled with music and laughter.
In an interview with People magazine, Van Dyke, who turned 99 earlier this month, stated, “The end of my life is so much closer.” He reflected further on his perspective, saying, “When you expire, you expire. I don’t have any fear of death for some reason. I can’t explain that, but I don’t. I’ve had such a wonderfully full and exciting life. That I can’t complain.”
Van Dyke’s upbeat demeanor remains evident as he navigates the approach of his centenary. When asked what surprises him most about reaching such an age, he humorously remarked, “The fact that I made it. I feel really good for 100. Sometimes I have more energy than others — but I never wake up in a bad mood. I feel like I’m about 13.”
Health and Happiness: A Lifelong Philosophy
Much of Van Dyke’s positive outlook can be attributed to his life choices and relationships. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy mindset, noting that anger and hate can be detrimental. He shared insights about his father, stating that those negative emotions took a toll on him. “I’ve always thought that anger is one thing that eats up a person’s insides — and hate. And I never really was able to work up a feeling of hate. I think that is one of the chief things that kept me going,” he explained.
The iconic entertainer also credits his wife, Arlene Silver, for playing a significant role in his happiness. He described her as “responsible for keeping me in the moment,” highlighting the joy she brings to his daily life. “She can get me singing or dancing, and she carries so much responsibility. I’m just lucky,” he stated, reflecting on the deep bond they share.
As he nears his 100th birthday, Van Dyke’s reflections serve as an inspiration for many. His life story showcases not only a remarkable career in entertainment, including his iconic role in Mary Poppins, but also a philosophy that promotes joy, resilience, and gratitude.
In a world often preoccupied with the fear of aging and death, Dick Van Dyke‘s perspective offers a refreshing reminder that a fulfilling life can be celebrated, even in its twilight years.
